Overview:

Magnetic Resonance Center (CERM) is an infrastructure in the field of structural biology in general and life sciences in particular. It is a laboratory of national and international importance, specialized in structural investigations through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The Centre specialises in structural biology, molecular biology, design and development of new drugs, metabolomics and bioinformatics, and houses some of the most advanced NMR high-field instrumentation in the world (up to 950 MHz) for the spectroscopic and biophysical characterization of biological systems, alongside molecular biology laboratories and biophysical instrumentation. CERM is the Italian node of the pan-European ESFRI Instruct infrastructure (www.structuralbiology.eu) as a reference for the development and application of NMR spectroscopy in the field of integrated structural biology and molecular systems biology.

Skills:
CERM is the Competence Centre of the Region of Tuscany for the technology transfer from university to industry, for all applications in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance regarding investigations in the biological, pharmaceutical, biomarkers, food field.

Products/Services

  • Research and development services through the large collection of high field NMR instruments (shared with CIRMMP) for the structural characterization of biological macromolecules, screening of drug candidates, studies for the design of innovative vaccines, characterization of metabolic profiles of biological fluids, food quality, material characterization. The center is equipped with NMR at 950 MHz, 900 MHz, 850 MHz WB, 800 MHz, 700 MHz WB, 2 x 700 MHz, 2 x 600 MHz, 500 MHz and 400 MHz, as well as other routine instruments, as well as a relaxometer. The large number of instruments available allows the combination of all NMR investigation methods. All the high resolution instruments are digital spectrometers of the Bruker AVANCE series, most of them are equipped with CryoProbe to improve their sensitivity and with different electronic configurations (number of channels, lock-switches, boards, etc.) to satisfy the most different experimental needs. • External access conditions: The request for the use of the instruments, available both at national and international level, is made through an online form for the request of machine time, to be completed both from the qualitative (spectrometer required and type of experiments) and quantitative (number of days required) point of view. Applications are evaluated by a committee composed of internal staff and external experts. The form is available here: http://www.cerm.unifi.it/static/access/access.html
