Probiomedica, a start-up founded in 2015, combines engineering, biology, photonics and robotics and aims to develop innovative devices for applications in the service of health and the person. Probiomedica with its experts is dedicated to the study of technological innovations to be used to improve its products and create new ones. The first product of the company under development is CapsuLight, an ingestible led capsule for the treatment of infection with Helicobacter pylori. The capsule, as small as an antibiotic pill, uses simple LEDs and a normal battery, emitting light of specific wavelengths to cause the elimination of Helicobacter, without the side effects related to antibiotic-resistance. The disposable capsule is based on technologies similar to those of diagnostic endoscopic capsules, which have been commercially available for 15 years.

The food "project" was born in 1986 as a simple laboratory of microbiology. From the very beginning, in addition to the analysis activities, the consultancy activity for the food industries was developed, proposing and implementing innovative quality control systems based on the HACCP model in the field. Over the years, the laboratory continued to adapt to the new regulatory framework and in 1996 obtained the inclusion in the list of the Ministry of Health as a laboratory qualified to perform tests of hygiene and health control on food products. Finally, in 1999, the new company Progetto Alimenti was founded, also thanks to the collaboration with other professional figures. Progetto Alimenti operates in the sector according to three points of intervention. • Specialized analysis laboratory on all food matrices with methods validated according to international standards. • Consultancy at companies, in close contact with entrepreneurs and employees. • Training courses for personnel involved in the preparation and use of food.

QualiMedLab

From the long experience of the Institute of Clinical Physiology of the CNR of Pisa (IFC-CNR) in the quality control of immunometric assays, since 1980, in 2006 was born as a spin-off of the CNR QualiMedLab, for the design and development of products and services for quality control in laboratory medicine. QualiMedLab develops and manages External Evaluation (EQV) programs, already the subject of CNR research projects in collaboration with other European centers, still in progress. The External Quality Assessment Programmes in Laboratory Medicine (VEQ or EQAS External Quality Assessment Schemes) are designed to allow retrospective comparison between determinations carried out in different laboratories. Participants in VEQ programmes obtain, through periodic reports of results, useful information on the analytical performance of the different methods/kits used in the measurements. The control samples, in lyophilic form, are prepared from human serum with the possible addition of purified components of human origin, pure chemicals, preservatives and stabilizers; the sera are lyophilized to increase their stability.

QUIPU

Quipu, founded in 2011 as a spin-off of the Italian National Research Council and the University of Pisa, is specialised in medical imaging and innovative ultrasound technologies. In particular, Quipu design a new generation of diagnostic ultrasound systems based on software applications, that can change the world of medical ultrasound systems overcoming the limitations that make ultrasound still underutilized. Quipu team includes engineers and doctors who share 20 years work experience in the field of medical ultrasound. Quipu developed a software platform, Cardiovascular Suite, containing innovative software programs performing specific ultrasonic examinations (FMD Studio and Carotid Studio) for assessing early markers of cardiovascular risk. The platform runs on a standard personal computer based on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X or Linux. Today, the platform works in connection with any existing ultrasound scanner and adds advanced functions to standard ultrasound devices. A new-generation ultrasound scanner is under development to complete a new medical ultrasound architecture based on software applications.

RELIEF is an innovative start-up born from the experience of a team of researchers of the Scuola S.Anna, result and evolution of activities and research experiences in the field of urinary incontinence and implantable robotic devices. The homonymous product Relief (Restoration of the urinary continEnce and of the control of urination by artificial sFintere) is an implantable device able to represent an effective solution to the problem of urinary incontinence, a dysfunction that affects about 350 million people in the world and with a growth trend for the next few years, with causes of a different nature. The device, which has already attracted the interest of some operators in the sector and won some competitions for start-ups, consists of a valve based on polymer and titanium, activated simply through an external magnetic field to regulate the expulsion of urine, is easy to implant and competitive in terms of costs and applications compared to current market products. The clinical phase of testing the device is about to start.

S.M. Scienzia Machinale Srl was founded in 1990 by a group of young researchers from the Robotics laboratories of the Scuola S.Anna and began its independent journey as a partner in a series of European projects in the field of medical robotics applications. A few years later, he entered the industry and made his know-how and staff available to search for innovative solutions on behalf of third parties. In 2004, he founded Fabrica Machinale, a company currently operating in service robotics with its own industrial products marketed under the brand name Roboticom. Scienzia Machinale currently operates on the market under two brands, Novamentis and Sensometrico. Novamentis offers contract design and engineering R&D services in the field of mechatronics and robotics, while Sensometrico designs, manufactures and offers on the market measuring instruments for mechanical and tribological characteristics of materials based on patented methodologies and techniques. Since 2015, it has been part of a multinational group of companies, whose parent company is the U.S. Epica International Inc.
